Did You Know? Windshield Frit

Many people have asked us, “Why is there a black trim around the entire windshield? What does that do?”

The black band around the entire perimeter of the windshield is called the frit. The main purpose of the frit is to hide the urethane that is used to hold the windshield in. When we replace your windshield, we properly use primer and activator to ensure correct bond adhesion of the urethane to the windshield and to the body of your vehicle. When the windshield is set in place, the urethane is pressed down, and the frit hides the urethane.

Additionally, you may also notice that there are small dots around the inside of the frit. These dots help to disperse heat evenly from the outdoors and the defrosters, helping to prevent cracks from temperature changes. At Xtreme Auto Glass, we thoroughly inspect the frit on every windshield we replace to ensure these features will perform as expected. Call us today for a free quote, 716-542-1100.
